Midlothian Council: dog rules

Council-wide dog rules, beaches and named places

We've only partly added this council's dog rules. Check the source for the full order.

Partly added

  • Scotland has no dog control orders like England's. Under national law you must pick up after your dog in public places (£80 fixed penalty), and keep it under control.
  • Follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code: short lead or heel near farm animals and nesting birds (usually April to July), and keep out of fields with lambs or calves.
  • Some councils use byelaws or management rules to keep dogs off play areas, sports pitches or busy beaches in summer, so follow local signs.

Council byelaws not added yet.

Assistance dogs: most council dog orders and beach bans exempt assistance dogs, such as guide and hearing dogs. Check the source if you are unsure.
