Cherwell District Council: dog rules
Council-wide dog rules, beaches and named places
Rules added
- There is no order requiring dogs to be on a lead, but dogs must be kept under proper control. The council deals with dogs that worry people, other dogs or animals.
- Letting your dog foul any public area without picking up is an offence. £100 fixed penalty (raised recently, so older signs and web pages may still show £50).
Confirmed by email from the council's dog warden, 26 October 2026.
Assistance dogs: most council dog orders and beach bans exempt assistance dogs, such as guide and hearing dogs. Check the source if you are unsure.
